Teaching Your Child Money Doesn’t Grow on Trees

June 5th, 2009 · No Comments

How many times did you hear the phrase as a child, “money doesn’t grow on trees”?  If you didn’t then you didn’t have the type of dad I did.  In our house my dad would often say this phrase and he meant it.  And today as an adult I know that the saying is true.  We as adults all know that we have to work hard for the money that we earn and enjoy, or maybe even don’t get to enjoy.

So, how do we teach our kids about that concept and how do we help them to learn at an early age that “money doesn’t grow on trees”?

The following are some ways you can try:

Establish an allowance.  Giving your child an allowance can help to establish some responsibility in them that will help them to see where money comes from and how to manage money.

If they are older have them do chores for their allowance and actually earn the money.  You may even want to have them open a savings account or save their money in a jar or envelope to give them an appreciation for saving money as well.

Teach them the value of hard work.  You can even share with them how long it takes you to earn $100.  Being honest and open with them and showing them the value of money can be an eye opening experience for them.  Take that $100 then take them to the store and show them exactly how many groceries that money will buy.  Actively showing them the value can help them to realize just how difficult money is to come by and how we should not throw it away frivolously.

Your child will learn to appreciate the value of a dollar and you more for your hard work.  Learn more about kids and money here.
